Kind of like SETI@home, but for collecting data instead of
processing it. From NPR.org: Newer models of laptops manufactured
by companies like Apple and Lenovo contain accelerometers -- motion
sensors meant to detect whether the computer has been dropped. If
the computer falls, the hard drive will automatically switch off to
protect the user's data."As soon as I knew there were these
low-cost sensors inside these accelerometers, I thought it would be
perfect to use them to network together and actually record
earthquakes," says geoscientist Elizabeth Cochran of the University
of California, R...

Geek Chic: Spinner, a network of wearable sensors

Spinner is a rather theoretical project by MIT grad student Mathew
Laibowitz that gathers together data from a variety of wearable and
environmental sensors "order to develop a parametric model of
effective narratives that can be mapped onto sensor-detectable
elements of human behavior." Spinner is a novel sensor network
system designed to detect and capture fragmented events of human
behavior that can be collected and sequenced into a cohesive
narrative that conveys a larger overall meaning. Research into
narrato...
John Park in the Maker Shed: PIR Arduino motion alarm
Want to learn how to hook up a passive infrared (PIR) sensor to
your Arduino? Check out this video I put together doing just that.
These sensors are very nice to work with either by themselves
(along with a transistor or relay) or on a microcontroller. You get
about a 20 ft. range for detecting motion from humans, animals,
other things that emit a decent amount of infrared radiation. WILL
NOT DETECT THE UNDEAD. This is the same alarm setup I used to prank
my kids on April Fools' Day. In the Maker Shed:

The PIR Sensor detects motion up to 20 feet away by using a Fresnel
lens and infrared-sensitive element to d...
Hot-wire cut styrofoam chair

From designer Khodi Feiz, the Wip Chair is CNC-cut from a single
piece of polystyrene foam. The chair was produced in large numbers
and featured in a 2006 installation at the Dutch embassy in Berlin.

Urban camouflage iPad case

My friend Matt Silver showed me the quick and dirty urban
camouflage iPad case he made out of an old composition notebook
cover and a scrap of non-slip rug padding. This has to be the
coolest iPad case I've seen to date. Not only is it extremely
simple, low-cost, and recycled, but it has that great warn-in
feeling. More:Flashback: U-G-L-Y Your BikeJimmie's uglified
